Video Modeling Effectiveness

A Closer Look at Preschool: Beginning Play Skills uses a unique video modeling approach to help young children learn play and social skills crucial to success in early learning environments. The DVD is organized into 4 components, including professional comments and suggestions to guide parents and professionals. The "instructional component" teaches the child how to play from the point of view of the child's hands. The class time component highlights functional play skills (taught in the instructional component) and social skills (sitting at circle time, joining play, and sharing information with a friend) as they naturally occur in the classroom setting. An "Uh-Oh" component is a fun, interactive quiz that teaches the children several strategies to problem solve their everyday social situations.

DVD, approximately 90 minutes

A Closer Look at Preschool Volume 2 uses video modeling to teach pretend play skills that are crucial to child development. Using a unique video modeling approach of filming children playing naturally, this DVD addresses how to play house, grocery store, restaurant, birthday party and storybook play. The DVD has four important components: a professional introduction describing the intended use of the DVD; an instructional segment which links real life experiences to sequenced core pretend play skills; a visual review which helps children develop a group play plan; and "real play" in which the children featured in the DVD use the core skills they have learned. Starky Star points out the important core play steps as they happen in real play. Finally, an "uh-oh" component provides a fun, interactive quiz that teaches children to problem solve in everyday social situations.
Runtime: 90 minutes.
